I'm Matt Surrusco, a journalist in Hong Kong. I've been writing news for print and online publications for about a decade. Based in Phnom Penh, Cambodia from 2016-2022, I've reported and edited breaking, daily, enterprise and feature stories, most often working with diverse teams on stories that focus on people and how policy and powerful institutions affect their lives. I thrive in collaborative news environments.
I’ve reported on Cambodia's COVID-19 response, 2017 and 2018 elections, the microfinance industry and various human rights issues, the deportation of formerly incarcerated Cambodians raised in the U.S., the effects of the Cambodian government’s anti-drug crackdown, Palestinian child labor in the West Bank, the 2016 U.S. presidential campaigns and more. I've also edited award-winning investigations and worked with a range of news professionals, from first-time reporters to veteran journalists.
My work has been published in New Naratif, VOD, Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa), the South China Morning Post, The Cambodia Daily, World Policy Journal, The Daily Beast, +972 Magazine, Truthout and others.
